Although it is really an acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, high quality teaching and learning in STEM only happens throughan inter-disciplinary approach where general capabilities are integrated.  Although often overlooked but of great significance, are capabilities in communication & collaboration, problem solving, critical & creative thinking.

According to research by Professor Lowrie, the best approach to teaching STEM or STEAM is to focus on the practices that underpin the disciplines rather than the content. The diagram bellow shows what STEM practices are:

To engage sustained high quality STEM learners, enhance STEM literacy and capability and increase student engagement in STEM disciplines, teachers should be:

· creating authentic, age-appropriate learning contexts to teach STEM knowledge, understanding and skills

· ensuring learning contexts connect to a range of environments, including school, community, work and the global marketplace

· developing contexts that provide equal access for all students.

Human Centred Design Thinking offers a designer’s toolkit to problem finding and problem solving. It engages students to find creative and innovative solutions to STEM problems that affect everyone from individual students, classrooms and schools to the global community.

Training objectives: Through two-day training, participants will obtain:
